What Impact Would The Paid Leave Act Have? D.C. Businesses Weigh In

The D.C. Council is set to hold a final vote Tuesday on legislation that would create some of the most generous universal paid leave requirements in the nation, mandating employers to offer workers eight weeks paid family leave, six weeks to care for a sick family member and two weeks of medical leave.

The bill, introduced in 2015 by Councilman David Grosso, I-At large, has already passed one vote in the D.C. Council. If it passes Tuesday, the bill will be sent to Mayor Muriel Bowser. She has not said whether she would sign it and has raised concerns about its financial impacts.

So far, the business community is anything but at peace with the plan.

There are some who have expressed support, saying it will help them afford a pricey benefit and remain competitive with larger companies.
