Update: UMMS Taps New CEO Following Tumultuous Year

The board of University of Maryland Medical System will promote Dr. Mohan Suntha, head of the flagship University of Maryland Medical Center, to CEO of the entire health system.

Suntha will assume the new role effective Dec. 1, UMMS said Wednesday. He has worked within UMMS his entire career in medicine, and has previously served as CEO of two of the system’s 12 general hospitals. He served as CEO of the University of Maryland St. Joseph Medical Center in Towson for four years starting in 2012, before being appointed CEO of UMMS’ flagship medical center in Baltimore. He has been leading UMMC, which spans two campuses in the city’s downtown area, since Sept. 1, 2016.

As head of UMMS, he will oversee the system’s 13 Maryland hospitals, as well as the 28,000 employees and 4,000 affiliated physicians working at more than 150 care sites across Maryland. In a statement, he said he is “humbled and honored” by the opportunity.

Alison Brown, the current president of UMMC’s Midtown Campus, will lead the downtown campus as well on an interim basis while the hospital’s board conducts a search for Suntha’s permanent replacement.
