William Tilburg has been named the permanent director of the Maryland Medical Cannabis Commission, the body that governs the industry in Maryland and grants licenses for providers.
Tilburg was chosen three months ago to lead the organization on an interim basis after serving as the commission’s director of government affairs and policy. He took over as acting executive director in September after Joy Strand, director for the previous 21 months, resigned. Her predecessor, former state trooper Patrick Jameson, stepped down in 2017 after less than two years in the role.
Commission chair Brian Lopez said in a statement that Tilburg “brings a wealth of experience to our Commission as it relates to state regulatory issues and an in-depth knowledge of the Commission and the industry.”
Lopez also pointed to Tilburg’s existing relationships with state legislators as a plus, as well as his reputation “as one of the most knowledgeable experts among regulators nationally.”
