The District Council allowed two development projects to move forward in Largo, paving the way for the creation of “Downtown Largo.”
On Monday, the District Council voted to take no action on both the Detailed Site Plan (DSP) for infrastructure for Capital Court, a multifamily residential project proposed at the southeastern intersection of Central Avenue and the Beltway, and the DSP and Departure from Design Standards for the redevelopment of the Hampton Park mixed-use project in the southwestern portion of that same intersection. The District Council’s actions allow the planning board’s approvals with conditions for the projects to stand, giving the projects the green light to proceed.
Council Chair Derrick Davis said both developments are part of jump-starting the “downtown Largo” vision, which will be anchored by the new regional medical center and some county government functions near the Largo Town Center Metro station.
“It’s just going to be a beautiful explosion of opportunities that creates jobs, that has new retail, has new residential opportunities right at a Metro. So if you’re a Baby Boomer or a Millennial, you have a great opportunity to come and be a part of downtown Largo,” he said. “It’s an exciting, exciting opportunity, and so all the development that you hear about that comes through District Council is part of that boom.”
Capital Court includes 307 townhouse units and a parcel for the future development of a multifamily residential project. In total, the plan covers 36.42 acres. A DSP for infrastructure shows the location and design of roads, parking, landscaping, utilities, sidewalks and fencing.
