Purple Line Pre-Construction Work Continues

RIVERDALE – The Purple Line project, on behalf of the Maryland Transit Administration (MTA), has begun pre-construction work in several locations around Prince George’s and Montgomery counties.

The most recent work began Oct. 18 on University Boulevard between Piney Branch Road and West Park Drive in Langley Park and will continue until mid-November. So far, the work consists of geotechnical borings designed to provide information about soil, rock and groundwater conditions.

The same type of work just wrapped up on the Baltimore-Washington Parkway and Riverdale Road, where it took place for two weeks beginning Oct. 11.

Paul Shepard, an MTA spokesman, said the borings will allow engineers and others involved with the Purple Line to finalize the design of the infrastructure it will utilize.

“The information obtained from this preliminary design activity is crucial to aid in determining foundation types for bridges, walls and depth structural strength required for pavement and track sections,” he said.
