Gov. Larry Hogan’s administration says the cost for construction of the Purple Line will be nearly $2 billion.
The Maryland Department of Transportation released the new number Friday.
Earlier this week, the department announced a team of private companies has been chosen to design, build, operate and maintain the 16-mile light rail between Bethesda and New Carrollton in Montgomery and Prince George’s counties.
The Hogan administration says it has found about $550 million in savings over the life of the 36-year contract, from nearly $6.2 billion to $5.6 billion. The net cost to the state will be about $3.3 billion. The rest comes from federal and county funding.
The next step is for the Purple Line contract to the Board of Public Works for review and approval on April 6.
