Officials say traffic to MGM National Harbor casino in December could be so heavy that it would require the deployment of nearly 200 county police officers to manage the congestion, in an operation that could extend for weeks and likely Prince George’s County taxpayers hundreds of thousands of dollars.
The county’s top law enforcement official last week outlined a plan that will put officers on the streets of Oxon Hill, to manage the traffic expected for the Dec. 8 grand opening events at the $1.4-billion casino resort, and during the first 30 to 45 days of the casino operations.
Prince George’s Police Chief Henry P. Stawinski III said officers will work around the clock to facilitate traffic flow to the resort where as many as 35,000 visitors are expected. An agency helicopter will be in the air “all the time” during the operation, he said.
