Laurel Regional Hospital will stay open as a full-service hospital at least until the end of 2017, Prince George’s County officials announced at a press conference Monday.
University of Maryland Medical System CEO Bob Chrencik said the medical system intends instead to revisit plans for the Laurel hospital and work with a community planning committee to determine the needs there even further into the future.
“I think it can make financial sense,” Chrencik said.
His comments came one year after nonprofit owner Dimensions Healthcare System announced plans to close the Laurel hospital and turn it into a $24 million ambulatory care center by 2018 because of flagging revenue and admissions.
Chrencik said no services, including inpatient beds, are off the table for reconsideration for Laurel Regional Hospital. But he also guaranteed nothing, as UMMS prepares to take the reins of Dimensions Health System as part of a planned partnership. UMMS and Dimensions are awaiting state approval to build a new $655 million Prince George’s Medical Regional Center in Largo to replace Dimensions’ long-struggling hospital, Prince George’s Regional Hospital in Cheverly.
