The Stronach Group has agreed to purchase Prince George’s County’s Rosecroft Raceway from Penn National Gaming Inc., growing its number of operating race tracks in Maryland to three with Pimlico Race Course and Laurel Park.
Maryland Jockey Club General Manager Sal Sinatra said he could not disclose the purchase price and the agreement is subject to closing conditions. The purchase will also have to be approved by the Maryland Racing Commission. It is expected to be finalized by the end of June or early July.
“We’re just trying to brand the Maryland Jockey Club and so we’re continuing to expand throughout the state,” said Sal Sinatra, general manager for the Maryland tracks. “We think we can expand what they do down there and make it better.”
Penn National bought the track for $10.25 million at a bankruptcy auction in 2011, outbidding Orioles owner Peter Angelos. The track was closed at the time but reopened that year.
