Even if it doesn’t come up with Amazon.com Inc.’s second headquarters, Greater Washington could still land one of the most sought-after economic development prospects in North America right now: Apple Inc.
The Cupertino, California-based tech giant plans to make a decision relatively quickly on where it will put its latest corporate campus, and Apple (NASDAQ: APPL) executives are considering several sites in Northern Virginia that could meet the company’s needs for around 4 million square feet, according to sources familiar with the search.
Virginia economic development officials pitched several locations to the company, as was first reported by The Washington Post, including some of the same sites offered up to Amazon for HQ2 — Crystal City, Alexandria’s Eisenhower Avenue corridor, and near the Center for Innovative Technology campus straddling Fairfax and Loudoun counties, as well as the Scotts Run development by Cityline Partners in Tysons that was not part of the commonwealth’s Amazon bid.
Greater Washington isn’t the only metro area in the running for Apple. The Triad Business Journal reported Tuesday that Apple has set its sights on the Research Triangle Park as a top contender.
