The opening of MGM National Harbor will mean a surge in tourism for the Prince George’s County community, but also a surge in traffic. Now officials are trying to prevent it from becoming a total mess.
National Harbor management has initiated its enhanced traffic plan — restructuring and widening lanes, adding parking, introducing electronic signage and modifying traffic signals at 16 specific points between National Harbor, MGM and the Tanger Outlets. The work is scheduled to be complete by Dec. 1. MGM National Harbor is expected to open in December.
The $10 million effort, financed by National Harbor owner Peterson Cos., MGM National Harbor, Prince George’s County and the Maryland highway department, is designed to alleviate the expected road congestion, make traveling through and around the resort easier for visitors and maintain convenient access for residents.
