The Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority is considering moving its headquarters to a potential development on the Reagan National Airport footprint as part of a larger plan to accommodate Amazon.com Inc.’s second headquarters in Arlington County.
The prospect could set the stage for MWAA’s return to Reagan National after the authority moved its headquarters from the airport to leased space in Crystal City two years ago. That move was necessitated by the authority’s $1 billion “Project Journey,” to include a new passenger concourse — replacing the despised Gate 35X — and a secure National Hall.
The authority’s lease at 2733 Crystal Drive, where it occupies 74,248 square feet, extends to 2027.
It’s unclear how a deal would be structured, but MWAA officials have been weighing the idea at least since October, prior to Amazon’s Nov. 13 HQ2 announcement, according to emails obtained by the Washington Business Journal in response to a Freedom of Information Act request.
