The Montgomery County Planning Department this week unveiled preliminary recommendations to improve traffic safety in the Forest Glen and Montgomery Hills neighborhoods in Silver Spring, including reconfiguring the Capital Beltway’s interchange with Georgia Avenue.
As part of a review of the Forest Glen/Montgomery Hills Sector Plan, which aims to explore ways to improve transportation conditions, the planning department held a community meeting Tuesday night at its headquarters in Silver Spring, where it outlined preliminary recommendations for the neighborhoods.
Staff suggests installing buffered sidewalks, bike lanes and underground utilities along Georgia Avenue. Planners also recommend reconfiguring the Beltway’s interchange with Georgia Avenue to improve traffic flow and vehicle safety.
Project planners introduced two options for reconfiguring the Beltway interchange, the first of which would eliminate the northbound ramp from the inner loop onto Georgia Avenue. The second option would completely rebuild the interchange to eliminate traffic weaving and reduce congestion, planners said.
