Merriweather Post Pavilion To Transfer Ownership As Columbia Development Plan Plays Out

Ownership of Merriweather Post Pavilion — where former President Jimmy Carter once sang “Georgia On My Mind” on stage and Jimmy Buffett strummed “Margaritaville” during dozens of concerts — is set to be transferred to the Downtown Columbia Arts and Culture Commission on Wednesday.

The 49-year old suburban concert venue was the centerpiece jewel of developer James W. Rouse close to 50 years ago when he designed Columbia.

Today, it is poised to get a more than a $19 million facelift as part of a massive overhaul of Columbia’s downtown district by the county and private developer Howard Hughes Corp. Howard Hughes bought the property and several others in the crescent-shaped swath of land near the concert venue from General Growth Properties in 2014.
