Maryland shed 7,200 jobs in March, moving the state’s unemployment rate for the first time in eight months.
The private sector lost 7,500 jobs during the month, while government jobs rose by 300, according to preliminary data released Friday by the U.S. Department of Labor. The overall decrease sent Maryland’s unemployment rate up to 4.3 percent, after holding steady at 4.2 percent since August.
The construction sector was among the industries that saw the biggest declines, posting an over-the-month loss of 4,500 jobs in March. Leisure and hospitality jobs decreased by 2,300, and the financial activities sector posted a loss of 1,400 positions. Manufacturing jobs declined by 600.
Meantime, the professional and business services sector increased by 2,000 jobs, and education and health services gained 400.
