As Maryland’s General Assembly began its 441st legislative session earlier this month, lawmakers acknowledged that their decisions in the next 90-some days will have a major impact on the future of Maryland institutions, perhaps more so than in past sessions.
They were not exaggerating.
Billions of dollars are at stake as legislators weigh education funding, potential sports betting proposals and the future of the Preakness Stakes in Baltimore after the city and the company that owns Pimlico Race Course reached a preliminary deal last fall. If that deal is passed by lawmakers, it will have a major impact on Maryland’s thoroughbred horse racing industry and ensure the second jewel of the Triple Crown stays in Baltimore.
This session will also be the first for the new presiding officers of both chambers of the General Assembly, even as many committees in both chambers will see new leadership.
