Howard County Council Chairman Calvin Ball is calling on the county’s Human Rights Commission to study recruitment and hiring practices following the resignation of former Howard County Sheriff James Fitzgerald.
Fitzgerald resigned this month after a report by the county’s Office of Human Rights found probable cause that Fitzgerald discriminated against an employee and created a work environment with pervasive harassment and racially charged language.
The commission would study practices of the Howard County Department of Fire and Rescue Services, Howard County Sheriff’s Office, Howard County Police Department and the Howard County Public School System.
Ball is also calling on the Howard County Equal Business Opportunity Commission to study the effectiveness of the county’s Equal Business Opportunity Program, a county-led initiative that aims to include businesses led by minorities, women and people who are disabled in the county’s procurement process for all goods and services.
