Gov. Larry Hogan on Tuesday said he’s been hearing from local leaders concerned that County Council member Marc Elrich’s election as county executive would discourage Amazon from picking Montgomery County as the site of its second headquarters.
Montgomery County is one of 20 jurisdictions—and the only Maryland location—on the short list of contenders for the corporate base, and Hogan said that’s in part because of the business-friendly attitude displayed by sitting county and state leaders.
“One of the reasons why they are leaning so heavily towards us was they’ve got an unabashedly pro-business governor. We have a county executive who was focused on the same things: transportation, jobs,” Hogan (R) said during a Tuesday stop in Derwood.
Upsetting that dynamic could sour the Seattle-based company on Maryland, he added.
“I think they’d be concerned about a governor and/or a county executive that was anti-jobs and was talking about policies that might scare them away,” he said.
