Former trainees of Maryland Live Casino in Hanover have won an appeal in a case in which the trainees are seeking unpaid wages for their time attending a casino dealer school.
The U.S. Court of Appeals for the 4th Circuit on Monday reversed a decision by U.S. District Court in Maryland, which dismissed the trainees lawsuit last April. The trainees sued in October 2014.
The appeals court offered no opinion on whether the school constituted work but found that trainees have “alleged sufficient facts” to claim the casino has violated federal and state wage laws.
“We look forward to having the workers’ properly paid for all hours worked as the law requires as Maryland Live! was the primary beneficiary of the trainees’ labor,” said Steven Lubar, an attorney with the Law Offices of Peter T. Nicholl who represented the workers.
A Maryland Live representative could not be reached Wednesday.
