D.C. Council Will Vote On Outlawing Credit Checks For New Hires. Here’s How That Will Work.

Council will consider on Tuesday, would amend D.C.’s human rights laws to prohibit employers from discriminating against potential employees based on their credit scores or credit histories. Businesses found to violate the new law would pay $1,000 for the first violation, $2,500 for the second and $5,000 for each additional violation.

And while the legislation is not guaranteed to pass, its place on the agenda shows its supporters believe it has a strong chance of passage.
