A hospital and a health system in Maryland filed petitions calling for a judge to review the Maryland Health Care Commission’s unanimous decision to select Annapolis, Md.-based Anne Arundel Medical Center as the site for a new cardiac surgery program, according to a report from the Capital Gazette.
The petitions were filed by two affiliates of the University of Maryland Medical System: Glen Burnie, Md.-based Baltimore Washington Medical Center and Prince George’s County-based Dimensions Healthcare System, the parent system of the new Cheverly, Md.-based Prince George’s Hospital Center, according to the report.
BWMC claimed the decision was inconsistent with state regulations, which require hospitals to include projections of how a new healthcare program would affect similar services at other local hospitals, according to the report. BWMC also applied to open the cardiac surgery program, but was denied in favor of AAMC, according to the report. Dimensions challenged the AAMC cardiac surgery program because it is concerned how it will affect Prince George’s Hospital Center, according to the report. Prince George’s Hospital Center is slated to open in 2020.
