Breweries generated $637 million and 6,500 jobs in state last year.
Maryland brewers generated $637 million and supported 6,541 jobs in 2016, Montgomery Community Media reported. The statistics come from a Bureau of Revenue Estimates economic impact study released at a Reform on Tap Task Force meeting on Wednesday.
Maryland Comptroller Peter Franchot heads the task force and noted the figures reveal craft beer is “one of our state’s most important and fastest growing economic engines” but urged reform to keep up with other states, according to Montgomery Community Media.
Montgomery County has seen a surge in breweries in recent years. Breweries that are open in the area include Denizens Brewing Co., 7 Locks Brewing, Wardeca Brewing Co., Saints Row Brewing and chain breweries Gordon Biersch and Rock Bottom. Astrolabe Brewing, True Respite Brewing Co. and Parallel World Brewing Co. plan to open over the next year.
